Deinking of printed paper materials has become a concern in modern paper recycling streams due to new printing and converting technologies which can introduce challenges to the traditional deinking processing steps.  As a means of predicting how well a printed paper substrate will deink, laboratory methods have been devised to test and score the resultant deinked pulp quality, and these test scores can be used to deem a product deinkable or not suitable for deinking.  One such method is INGEDE Method 11 (benchtop single loop method), which is a lab‐scale test method that was developed to simulate the deinking of offset printed mechanical fiber (newsprint), including supercalendered (SC) and light‐weight coated (LWC) wood‐containing paper grades.1 One major limitation of the benchtop single float method is that it incorporates single‐loop flotation as the primary processing step for deinking, yet purports to predict deinkability on the basis of this alone. 

Another deinking test method has been developed by Western Michigan University for its Recyclable Logo Certification – Towel & Tissue Application (pilot scale two loop method). This pilot‐scale process was modeled after deinking operations used for fast food packaging and graphic papers (bleached chemical wood‐free papers). This test method does a good job of predicting deinkability of bleached chemical recycled fiber using two loop flotation, bleaching, washing and dispersion, which are processing steps that are commonly used in North American recycle mills.  The objective of this study is to compare benchtop single float method to the pilot scale two loop method and to demonstrate that a two‐loop deinking process with flotation, bleaching, washing and dispersion will achieve excellent deinkability performance compared to a single‐loop flotation test on uncoated inkjet‐printed papers.
