New machine vision applications for the paper industry, 19PaperCon

On a modern paper machine there is typically two types of systems used to measure paper quality: a web inspection system (WIS) and a quality control system (QCS).  These two systems measure different quantities; for example, QCS systems measure, among others, MD and CD paper properties such as basis weight, moisture, and caliper; WIS systems, on the other hand, measure primarily defects and other quality variables of paper.  For at least the last ten years, there has been much discussion and some research and development activity on some ways of combining these two systems to provide more information which cannot solely be produced by one of the systems only or both functioning in isolation.  However due to lack of required sophistication in hardware capabilities, that has not been possible so far.  Now with new capabilities, this, too, may become reality.

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.
