Production and Evaluation of Paper with High Fiber Orientation for Paper-Based Construction Materials, 19PaperCon
This paper is part of fundamental research to make paper accessible as building material. The primary research objective is to produce papers with the highest possible fiber orientation. Therefore, an experimental sheet former was built up. The wire has a width of 260 mm and a length of 1.56 m. The new sheet forming principle consists of a traversing nozzle and a parallel moving suction system. Additives are currently unavoidable to avoid fiber flocks. An image analysis algorithm classifies the alignment by means of tracer fibers. After a preprocessing step, a convolution of a prototype fiber segment with the original image is performed for each angle. It was possible to achieve an increased orientation, whereby no optimization of the machine parameters was carried out yet. In mechanical test, the NBSK handsheets produced on the experimental sheet former showed that breaking stress ratios bigger than 4 and elastic moduli of up to 5 GPa are possible.
