How to Perform Sensor Correlation “The Right Way”?, 19PaperCon

Dynamic sensor correlation is drastically needed at every paper mill site to ensure that the online sensor measurements match their quality laboratory results. There are a lot of challenges in the field while dealing with sensor correlation. Some papermakers have misconceptions about sensor correlation and don’t see the significance of this process. Most papermakers are finding it difficult to maintain repeatable results between the lab and the online sensors. Some failed to see the “big picture” and to understand the contributing factors to the sensor correlation results. This paper will address the misconceptions about sensor correlation and explain the differences between sensor calibration and correlation. It will educate papermakers on the contributing factors to sensor correlation variation and how to properly set the “expected deviation limits” for correlation results. This paper will also recommend best practices for the setup of sensor correlation in a way to improve the accuracy of quality measurements and comply with TAPPI standards (Paper and Paperboard Testing T400-500 Series).

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.
