Polyolefin Based Waterborne Barrier Coatings for Paperboard, 19PaperCon



A common approach for providing water barrier on paper or paperboard involves laminating or extruding thick polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) films.  There is market interest in moving away from these traditional barrier solutions in favor of thinner, more easily applied, and more environmentally friendly coating options – particularly for hot and cold beverage cups.1,2 

 An alternative is to deliver the same polyolefin chemistry to paper and paper board surfaces, but as a waterborne coating.  This approach keeps the same water barrier performance of thick PE and PP films, but allows for reduced coat weight demands, improved repulp and recyclability, novel formulation options, inline application during paper manufacturing, and improved environmental impact.  One technology that delivers these advances as a waterborne coating is polyolefin dispersion. 


Polyolefin dispersions (PODs) are created via a mechanical dispersion process (for example, see Figure 1)3-4 creating a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) which can then can be diluted with water to a useful solids level (30-60 wt. %).  Importantly, PODs use a similar chemistry to extruded polyolefin films providing similar broad liquid barrier, stain resistance, heat sealability, and block, but at significantly lower coat weights. Therefore, PODs provide the performance of high molecular weight thermoplastics with the applications advantages of high-solids waterborne dispersions.  Polyolefin dispersions have been created to address a range of applications over the past several years (e.g. metal packaging5-6), but until recently were not optimized for performance in paper/paperboard coating applications.7,8
