The Paper360° TOP 75, Paper360º September/October 2019
Change is a constant and readers familiar with this popular annual feature will see right away that we have moved from a Top 100 list to a Top 75.
The number of mergers/takeovers in the industry has forced the change. For example, in this year’s list, familiar names such as KapStone, Tembec, and Glatfelter have moved into the annals of history. As Suzano’s takeover of Fibria was only completed in early 2019, the 2018 numbers for Fibria were available. The jury is still out on the Paper Excellence takeover of Eldorado. Catalyst Paper still published some numbers, despite its status as a private company, before being bought by Paper Excellence; yet, since they dropped from #54 all the way to #81, they don’t make the list this year.
As well, those familiar with this feature from its time at PPI Magazine will remember that it started as the Top 150, but a spate of M&A activity in the late 1990s and early 2000s forced a decrease to 100.
One other change is the absence of a market pulp production total. Many companies do not divulge the amount they produce, so beginning this year the editors have decided to omit this statistic rather than publish an incomplete, misleading number.
