SetPoint: Powerful Influences, Paper360º January/February 2020

When I was a star-eyed poetry student studying for my master’s degree, my professors decried those among us afraid of being “overly influenced” by the work of other poets. You may know the type: the would-be artistés who seem to believe they should develop their own voice in a vacuum to maintain its purity and uniqueness.

Of course, that’s ridiculous. We WILL be influenced, inevitably and by everything. We do better by welcoming influence, curating it, and seeking it out from the best—our personal collection of influences is precisely what makes us unique.

I was reminded of this last month when our industry lost two champions: TAPPI Fellow Jeff Reese of IP; and my TAPPI colleague and long-time industry journalist Ken Patrick. Both were powerful influences on the people who knew them. Ken was a seasoned pro with a passion for the pulp and paper industry and a fierce intellect. Jeff was an exemplary volunteer leader who worked tirelessly to support knowledge sharing and to help prepare young engineers for promising careers. The industry was lucky to have them.
