SetPoint: Creating a New Normal, Paper360º May/June 2020
I’m writing this column from my home office, as I usually do. I live in suburban Chicago, so it would be quite a commute to TAPPI headquarters outside of Atlanta. Yet, for the first time I am imagining that many of you are also reading from your home office space—a space that may be doubling as a schoolroom, a clean room, or a paper products warehouse. At press time, almost 95 percent of Americans were living under some level of “stay at home” order; Chicagoland has been on lockdown for weeks.
I hope that, by the time you read this, things have changed for the better. Still, there is no denying that the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic will leave a lasting mark on the global economy, on our businesses, and on our families. As things have changed over the past few weeks, we’ve all been doing our best to accommodate a “new normal.” We’ve tried to set positive examples for our children, neighbors, and those we lead at work. We’ve shown appreciation for the millwrights, delivery drivers, and store clerks who keep our shelves stocked with the paper products we need to stay clean and healthy. We’ve cheered from windows for the tireless health care workers on the front lines. I hope that our nation’s growing “We’re in this together” attitude will persist much longer than this virus.
