CD ACTUATOR MAPPING EXPRESSION AND ANALYSIS, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)
CD control solutions provided by various automation suppliers treat CD actuator mapping in different ways. Actuator numbering order may or may not be in the same direction as profile databox order. Also, the reference points for CD actuator mapping are often defined differently by different suppliers. Fully understanding how mapping is setup, expressed and utilized is not a minor task. An even more difficult task is analyzing CD actuator mapping to improve CD control applications.
This paper introduces a common CD actuator mapping representation that is supplier independent. The actuator zone to profile mapping relationship is expressed in one of three different length units: engineering units (centimeter or inch), databox width, or actuator width. The paper will show the common characteristics of CD actuator mapping regardless which unit is used. However, from mill user point of view, certain expression may be more intuitive than others. In the meantime, mapping analysis based on the introduced representation is crucial to explore the characteristics of CD actuator mappings. Examples from different machines will be used to illustrate the analysis.
Unique advantages of this approach are a consistent description of mapping across all suppliers and machines, the expression of mapping as linear and non-linear equations, the ability to identify and reject bad data points, tracking mapping changes on a machine and identifying localized changes in shrinkage and mapping. The described approach has been proposed to Mapping Common Interest Group under TAPPI Process Control Division to be one of the standard ways to analyze CD actuator mapping. This effort began in 2014 with the call for establishing mapping standard and/or guidelines [2].
