Lessons Learned in Alarm Management, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)
Alarm floods and information overload have been the source of numerous incidents in a variety of industries for over the last half-century. In the process industries, efforts to improve the management of alarms occurred in both North America with the Instrument Society of America (ISOA, now International Society of Automation, ISA) and Europe with Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association (EEMUA). The product of those efforts has been in use for over two decades, with lessons to be learned on what has worked and the potential pitfalls in the process. This paper details the development of alarm management standards and their impact, both positive and negative, on process plant operation.
