Novel Materials Used as Size Press Primers for Liquid Electrophotographic Printing, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)
Print primers enable a broad range of substrates to be digitally printed using Liquid Electrophotographic Process (LEP) systems. These primers have been applied to various substrates in-line, off-line, and at the paper machine size press for treating paper. The primer coating is usually chosen to include functional groups suitable for promoting chemical interactions with the complementary organic functional groups in the toner to develop strong chemical adhesion of the toner to the surface of the substrate. Some materials used to provide better substrate adhesion can have a negative interaction with traditional starches used in the size press (1-2). This work demonstrates novel materials with equal-to-better digital print adhesion performance and expanded compatibility in different starches when compared to current commercially available materials.
