How You Operate an Asset Impacts its Reliability – Identify the Risk Now!, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)
An asset’s reliability is based not only on how it’s maintained but also on how it’s operated. In today’s mills in North America, we are operating processes beyond their original design parameters. Despite upgrades, over time assets, in particular motors, pumps, gearboxes, etc, are modified…or not…and documentation is reviewed and updated…or not…which leads to operating an asset outside of its design parameters. Traditional “predictive maintenance” can only detect a problem once damage has already started to occur. Once your vibration program detects problems with a bearing…it’s too late. When your oil analysis comes back with a high particle count….it’s too late. While you have identified a problem and predicted a potential failure, the damage has already started.
This presentation explores ideas and technologies to proactively identify assets that are being stressed, before damage occurs allowing a mill to make an informed decision about how it operates and when to take downtime to avoid more costly repairs. This leads to improved reliability, reduced maintenance costs and provides a more stable operating process to optimize. We will share some case studies and explore the practical value of Industry 4.0 on reliability and maintenance.
