Heat Recovery Systems, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)

This paper reviews the energy analysis for paper machine dryer sections and related air systems. Energy efficiency improvements help reduce the machine’s energy footprint and therefore, operational costs. A better understanding of the thermal energy distribution enables the judicious choices for heat recovery opportunities. Case studies demonstrate that significant improvements can be attained with viable payback times. A manageable step-wise process is presented to facilitate the improvement actions required.

Drying is the most energy-intensive part of the papermaking process. The thermal energy distribution of the drying process indicates that steam consumption at the dryer cylinders in the pre-dryer hood represents about 52% of the total energy requirement while the heating of hood supply air requires approximately 30%. Together, the dryer section represents over 80% of the total energy requirement in the papermaking process.

The most important air systems in the papermaking process provide the ventilation requirements for the enclosed dryer hood. Since energy efficiency is an important factor for overall cost efficiency it can be achieved with the use of heat recovery systems to recuperate and reutilize the heat energy available from the hood exhaust stream.
