ISA‐S71.04‐1985 established airborne contaminant classes for industrial process measurement and control equipment in many industrial markets, including pulp and paper. The RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) was adopted in Europe in 2006 and is now enforced in most of the United States. ANSI/ISA‐S71.04‐2013 was revised in 2013 in response to the removal of lead from solder in electronics and the resulting increase in failures due to corrosion. 

Electrical Room Air Quality (ERAQ) refers to the air quality standards maintained within electrical spaces to minimize component failures, due to corrosion caused by poor control of temperature, humidity, particulate, and contaminants.
