Impact of Cupstock coated with multilayer WBBC's process & product performance, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)
The pursuit of an alternative to extruded poly barriers on paperboard cup stock has become a high-interest topic within the packaging industry in recent years. To investigate the impact of multilayer water-based barrier dispersion (WBBC) coating technology on cup stock, we have studied the performance of commercially available dispersion coatings applied on existing cup stock base which today is utilized for extrusion of PE to produce hot and cold cups.
It has previously been shown that multilayer coatings provide an efficient solution in achieving improved barrier properties while maintaining a low coat weight. This will be advantageous from a sustainability perspective as both materials and energy usage can be reduced. In this study, a pilot coater was employed to apply commercially available coating product to a cup stock base paperboard.
