Efficient Management of Fines in the Stock Flow prior to Headbox in Paper, Board and Tissue Production, 2021 TAPPICon Live (21TAPL)
Increasingly efficient mixing systems enable the mixing of optimized, advanced wet end chemical systems and pulp increasingly close to the sheet formation phase. The improved technology opens novel opportunities for fines and filler management. Managing the short response times properly requires fast process control and operation by means of new measurement and automation tools. It is important to measure the right things, to take the right actions based on those measurements, and to optimize operation to fulfil the production targets.
The management of fines and fillers is a vital part of paper and board making. The shear forces of pumps, screens and cleaners together with the turbulence in the stock flow will easily break the weak and sensitive tiny agglomerates that chemicals build from the fines and fillers. To minimize additive costs and optimize quality, we must avoid the shear forces generated by the process and its equipment. White water consistency control is the most effective way to control retention and to stabilize the wet end. Using new, powerful mixing technology, most of the additives can be mixed into the stock after the screens, even after the attenuator receiver just prior to the headbox.
