The sheet can get to the reel with a poorly operating vacuum system – this is a fact often stated in these presentations and during a vacuum system and dewatering audit.  So how do you collect and analyze data to enhance and optimize this important process?  What data is necessary and how do you get it?  There are many examples of bad data being used in decision making, or lack of understanding in interpretation of data. Computers give exact information, like vacuum levels to 3 decimal places. Experience is needed to say if the number makes sense.  If you are old enough to have used a slide rule, you had to know where he decimal point went. Slide rules only provide number calculations to 3 significant figures. The point is...engineers need to know if data or a calculation makes sense. Are we using a bad calculation, or bad data, or both?
