SetPoint: Ladies and Gentlemen, The Year You’ve Been Waiting For, Paper360º January/February 2021

...or, put another way: “Good-bye, 2020, and good riddance.” I’ve never heard folks express more excitement about putting a hard year behind us and meeting the new year with high expectations. Seldom has an entire YEAR been more often referred to as challenging…difficult…or what’s that other phrase?

Oh, yeah: “…a dumpster fire.”

Never one to jump onto bandwagons (especially when they’re aflame), I’m writing today with a slightly different take. Instead of simply running headlong into 2021, let’s pause to consider two of 2020’s best lessons:

We learned new ways to connect. TAPPI, for instance, cancelled 23 in-person events during 2020—but TAPPI staff, members, and leaders worked incredibly hard to design and deliver a host of virtual events, blended learning opportunities, a new podcast (hosted by yours truly), and so much more. As we enter 2021, let’s focus on the vital support those connections have provided during the pandemic. Even when we can safely share knowledge in person again, many of these accessible programs will be continuing in some form; why not continue to take advantage of them?
