Unlocking the Growth Potential of Digitally Printed Folding Cartons through Functional Coatings, 21TAPPICon Virtual
Digital printing technology is driving every segment of production printing, including the folding carton packaging market. One reason for this expansion is due to digital printing’s ability to provide a level of interaction with the consumer (e.g., QR codes) – to produce “smart folding cartons.” Benefits such as high‐quality visuals, low volume print runs, faster equipment turnaround, and mass customization positions digital printing technology as a critical enabler to fulfill these market needs. Brand owners can benefit from drawing higher consumer interest to their packaging, particularly by enhancing their products’ shelf‐appeal with specialty varnishes, which possess an extensive (and tunable) gloss range. Furthermore, the formulation of protective coatings and finishes improves attributes such as water and resistance, and unique haptics coatings introduce tactile consumer interaction into the purchasing experience. Because many standard varnishes are incompatible with inkjet primers and/or inks, this presentation outlines several different product concepts that enable functional benefits through specialized, water‐based coatings specifically designed for use in the inkjet conversion processes.
