This work aims to establish that a radically different approach to spectrometer design can improve performance of FTIR spectrometers, making them a useful replacement for NIR instruments, for measuring and controlling pulp and paper manufacturing processes. Chemical mixtures were prepared in the laboratory and analyzed using a static optic FTIR spectrometer. Spectral analysis was performed using partial least squares multivariate analysis, and the root mean squared error of cross validation (RMSECV) was used as a proxy of limit of detection (LoD). The results show an LoD for sulfate of 14 ppm, sulfite of 33 ppm, SO2 of 8 ppm and CMC of 0.2 %wt.
