Creping blade wear modelling: An updated analysis of blade wear drivers in tissue production, 21TAPPICon Virtual

The wear mechanics of the creping blade are of critical importance in determining the productivity of the tissue machine, the quality of tissue produced, and the service life of the Yankee. Several key drivers of blade wear are within the control of tissue machine operators and managers, presenting significant scope for optimization. In this paper we investigate the relationship between blade wear and the process conditions on the tissue machine, to identify ways in which tissue manufactures can manage blade wear more effectively. Results are based on a database of worn blades from industry, measured in a laboratory and matched with the corresponding process conditions under which they were used.

The analysis shows that advances in modern tissue-making technology have delivered clear benefits, with high-performance ceramic blade materials, Yankee metallization technology, and advanced chemical blends for the Yankee coating all providing a reduction in blade wear rate compared to the traditional alternatives. In addition, the use of the cleaning blade can have a significant impact on the wear experienced by the creping blade. This provides an opportunity for tissue-makers to get immediate improvements with minimal investment.
