MODELING CONSIDERATIONS FOR STOCK FLOW USING HYDRAULIC MODELING SOFTWARE
ABSTRACT
Advancements in digital twin technologies have allowed facilities in every industry to improve
design and operation processes by allowing incorporation of accurate real data to validate future
scenarios. Modeling system hydraulics is an industry best practice helping engineers and
operations make better informed decisions because the simulation of process and system
changes are based on real data. Some software modeling systems provide an integrated product
to perform calculations for a variety of fluid systems, including stock, in a single interface.
This paper presents the general use of the hydraulic modeling software and explores major
considerations using this software to model system hydraulics for stock at consistencies up to
6%. In addition, general ideas for best practices during model setup along with minimum
requirements for information input are discussed, giving readers a better understanding of the
advantages and limitations of the program for modeling stock flow systems. PIPE-FLO is a
standard industry software for pulp systems that is used in developing hydraulic models for stock
systems. It is used for the examples noted in this paper.
