The pulp and paper industry is complex, including various mills, processes, production lines, and
outcomes. Pipes are a cost-efficient and flexible way to transport crucial process materials and side
streams, such as black and white liquor, bleaching chemicals, and sludges. Thus, one pipeline could be
critical for the whole production process to work effectively. However, the pipelines are vulnerable to
blockages and leakages that can lead to shutdowns for cleanouts costing pulp and paper mills tens of
thousands of dollars per hour or more. In addition to lost production caused by downtime the efficiency
of the power to operate the system is decreased. As the fouling creates more friction within the pipe
reducing the standard flow so the pumps have to work harder to try and maintain optimal production
levels. Currently standard practices like internal coatings, high-pressure cleaning, and chemical
cleaning are used to reduce fouling. These traditional methods still involve manual/mechanical
intervention, production lockdowns, or cause harmful chemical emissions. They do not sustainably
support industrial processes and productivity.
