Understand Belt Washer Washing Operation to Enhance Efficiency and Reduce Cost
ABSTRACT
It is well understood that the belt washer is an effective washer for brown stock washing and can provide good pulp quality at a low dilution factor. Often the operation of a belt washer is less than optimal due to improper washing conditions set up and control strategy. The mechanics of mat formation and vacuum control are very different from those on a vacuum washer and can lead to confusion and inefficient responses to changing process conditions. This paper identifies key differences in mat formation and washing modes compared to vacuum drum washers and how they influence washer performance. The implications of the key process parameters are also discussed. General guidelines are provided for proper set up and control of a belt washer. Many of the operational issues that frustrate operators of belt washers can be alleviated by understanding the unique needs of this design and establishing appropriate operating targets to optimize performance.
