Performance of Duplex Stainless Steel in Bleach Tower Environments – a Multi-Mill Study
Abstract
The corrosion resistance of stainless steel in D0 and D2 in four different mill bleach plants is presented in this paper.
The alloys selected included alloy 2507, Ferralium 255, and Zeron100 for their high pitting resistance number (PREN)
and their high chromium content, thought to perform well in ClO2 environments. The 2507 demonstrated the best
resistance to general and localized corrosion on the coupon racks put into service over periods of time between 99 and
over 400 days. Performance was established through weight loss and quantifying the number of crevices under a
castellated washer fitted on each coupon. This report provides insight into engineering experience shared by mills and
highlights the existence and importance of ASTM 380, NACE 0292, and TAPPI TIP 0402-35.
