Green Liquor Clarification Improvements by Utilizing
Existing Tanks and Vessels in Mills

Abstract
Having a good quality of green liquor is important throughout the entire liquor preparation
process in a kraft pulp mill. Poor liquor quality has an impact not only on cooking parameters
but it also effects maintenance and production cost for other equipment and auxiliaries. It should
be considered an area for improvements with very high potential.
Clarification is a reliable technique for green liquor treatment, but a major drawback of a clarifier
is that once it has been built and installed in a mill for a given throughput of green liquor flow, it
is very difficult to increase the production rate and green liquor flow due to the rise rate
requirement to ensure good settling of the dregs. Settling aids like polymer can be used to
accelerate the settling rate of dregs particles but the design of internals is also important for
keeping a low feed flow velocity entering the clarifier.
In this paper, have shown the possibilities to upgrade existing green liquor clarifiers to get
higher production rates and in the same time reduced solid substance in clear liquor. Clarifiers
have been rebuilt with two different concepts, both giving levels of suspended solids below 25
mg/l.
Increasing production and improving clarity utilizing existing green liquor clarifiers will have a
positive impact on the capital investments needed in mills that are planning for production
increases or where better green liquor clarity is needed.
