De-resinators and Kraft Yield – Why is it so Hard?
Abstract
The search for kraft yield has been going on for at least 50 years. We have made significant progress in understanding
the mechanics of chip handling, chip structure, the yield potential of different species of trees and other factors which
are mostly engineering and biological in nature. Our chemists have studied the kinetics of the delignification reaction
and the factors influencing the dissolution of lignin. We have done a great job identifying the factors that interfere
with selectivity of the pulping reaction. However, despite our best efforts, we still dissolve over half the tree in the
kraft pulping process. I want to look briefly at what we have learned, focus on one area that provides the best
opportunity for modest yield improvement and presents a tantalizing trial result that while not completely confirmed
provides some real promise in low temperature kraft pulping.
