Keeping the Lights On! Preventing Mill-wide Blackouts with Smart Power and Steam Management, TAPPICon22
The Rationale
Pulp and paper mills require steam and electrical power to fuel sophisticated production processes. Nearly every pulp and or paper mill has some form of power generation onsite. The balance between power generation, purchased power, and power usage can be complex. An unexpected power disruption or large equipment failure, can quickly disrupt this balance, spiraling to the point of a full-mill blackout with steep economic consequences.
The Objective
Intelligent power and steam management systems can help to better monitor and control plant conditions, and avert large disruptions at the mill. The objective of this manuscript is to discuss tips and methodologies using data analytics to show maintenance and reliability staff how to identify risks and prevent power system failures.
