High Build, Single Coat Epoxy Maintains Critical Path Schedule on Pipeline Rehabilitation Project , TAPPICon22
As a major producer of fiber-based products for cardboard packaging, International Paper Company’s (IP) Mansfield Mill requires continual maintenance of its pipelines for operation. In 2019, a few of the pipelines responsible for cooling the mill were identified for rehabilitation due to their deteriorated conditions.
To address these conditions, the owner issued a project to rehabilitate 100 linear feet (LF) of 54-inch and 21-inch steel water suction pipelines with epoxy coatings. Requiring a critical five-day mill shutdown, the owner desired a reliable coatings contractor to restore the condition of the host pipe and extend its service life. For this reason, completing the coatings scope within the allotted time frame was of great concern.
The owner identified a proven coatings contractor to perform the work, including rehabilitating the assets with 200 plus mils of epoxy. The epoxy product’s unique features offered numerous benefits to the owner including a rapid return to service within four to six hours of application—providing a timely solution within the owner’s critical shutdown window. When a similar rehabilitation issue arose at the mill two years later, the owner contracted the same coatings contractor to perform the coatings scope due to the team’s proven success.
