Enzymatic Bio-bleaching to Elevate Final Brightness and Mitigate Pulp Reversion, TAPPICon22

Enzymatic “Post” Xylanase Bio-Bleaching (Post-XBB) with EDT’s EnzOx is an environmentally friendly, CAPEXfree technology to elevate final pulp brightness and mitigate brightness reversion between the bleach plant and the paper machine or pulp dryer. Long pulp storage times, contaminated process water, and residual pulp chromophores within the bleached pulp can all contribute to significant and highly varying brightness loss following the bleaching process. Post-XBB treatment effectively mitigates brightness reversion of fully bleached pulp, raises final pulp brightness following HD storage and wet-end approach flow, and can reduce the variability of final pulp qualities. Brightness improvement with Post-XBB has been assessed on a variety of pulp types in laboratory studies and subsequent successful mill-scale applications. Net brightness gains in the range of 1.0 – 2.0 ISO units have been observed in both lab studies and mill applications, effectively mitigating reversion and in some cases creating net brightness gains.

Elevating pulp brightness has allowed mills to significantly lower their amount of off-spec pulp and paper, decrease brightening agent usage, and reduce bleaching chemical usage. Increasing incoming bleach plant Kappa, and thus yield, while maintaining normal bleach usage has also been explored. Mills have further been able to avoid pulp reversion over the course of 24+ hour shutdowns by utilizing Post-XBB to preserve brightness in bleached HD storage chests when reversion challenges might be greatest. Next-generation mill-tailored xylanase-based products, coupled with specialized expertise in enzymatic treatments of pulp and paper, can minimize risk and maximize value of Post-XBB applications.
