Quick Inversion Polymers- A New Family of Fixatives and Particle Retention Boosters, TAPPICon22
The increasing use of recycled fibers in paper and board production brings unique challenges for the manufacturers.
Common problems are the contaminants present in secondary fiber furnishes that can significantly reduce
production efficiency and product quality.
Newly developed quick inversion polymers provide superior hydrophobic particle fixation and have shown success
in improving machine cleanliness, efficiency, and machine runnability in both recycled linerboard and tissue grades.
These quick inversion polymers are multipurpose products. In addition to being an excellent fixative for stickies
control, they work well as retention and drainage boosters. They improve dewatering performance, e.g. in highgrammage
paperboard grades, and also help improve the efficiency of other functional chemicals, such as sizing, in
the papermaking process. Besides performance, new products need to have an excellent regulatory profile and be
cost effective. These quick inverting emulsion polymers(QIP) do not require aging time as traditional polymers do.
This eliminates the need for complicated costly make-down equipment and mill site storage tanks. This paper will
present an overview of the chemistry, application, and measurement techniques. Case studies will be presented to
illustrate the effectiveness of these new polymers.
