Performance and Benefits of Cross-Directional Controls for Pulp Dryers, TAPPICon22
A major Latin American pulp producer has decided to modify their existing 1,730 ADt/d, 8,000 mm wide,
and 165 meters/min speed pulp dryer to include the capacity of producing eucalyptus dissolving pulp (viscose) grades.
This decision has led to higher demands on quality control for dissolving pulp grades and the need of installing a
Honeywell® Experion MX Quality Control System with a cross directional - multivariable model predictive controller
(CD-MPC) along with headbox dilution profiling and steam showers CD actuators.
CD-MPC has been augmented with a new CD bale profile feature to allow the Operator to specify the number of
bales, cutter positions, and bale widths for optimal CD weight and moisture control of individual bales.
CD-MPC controls for pulp dryers has led to consistent bale height and size, improved conversion with significant
reduction of wasted time in the packaging machine and customer rejections, speed increase, faster startups and
product uniformity in general.
