Method to Create Actionable Sheet Defect Data Between a Tissue Machine and Converting Line, TAPPICon22

Defects that occur during tissue manufacture create waste and delay and can reduce machine speeds. A common practice is to install an array of cameras and LEDs positioned across the web on a tissue machine and deploy image processing routines to identity defects as the sheet passes across the camera field of view. Due to the construction of tissue machines these arrays of cameras and required illumination systems are located in areas that have frequent obstructions between the camera and the tissue web. These dynamic obstructions also create contrast changes that can be identified as defects to the camera system. The resulting false triggers are considered noise and populate the roll map with unusable data. This paper discusses a method to eliminate the contribution of false defects to the data set. A successful method to eliminate false defects will allow the data set to contribute to a bidirectional end-to-end total process efficiency increase.
