Understanding the 4.0 Path to Success, TAPPICon22
The first and second industrial revolutions used mechanical advantage and, later, steam and electric power to amplify the physical abilities of the laborer. The third industrial revolution used new measurement technologies and closed loop control systems to amplify the cognitive abilities of the laborer wherein the laborer’s situational assessment and decision-making processes were automated by control loops.
The 4th Industrial Revolution (4-IR) is a continuation of the third. In this 4th Revolution, the engineer is attempting to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to, again, move the assessment and decision-making processes from the mind to the machine. In the 3rd Revolution, the inputs are few, the measurements are reasonably accurate, the control is effective, the scope is small relative to the overall process and, consequently, the response is relatively timely.
