SetPoint: Choosing the Future, Paper360º March/April 2023

I once had a friend with a charming air of optimism leavened with good old-fashioned practicality. He also had a penchant for dropping lively bits of Southern wisdom. Here is one of my favorites:“

Never marry for money! Go where the rich people are... and fall in love.”

I laugh about that bit of advice, but honestly you can’t beat its utility. At its core, it’s about not merely dreaming about a “perfect” outcome—it’s about doing something to make that outcome happen. Who has time to wait until circumstances are right to go after the future? Better we should spend the time actively creating the circumstances that will bring that future to us.
