Corrosion of a Power Boiler Air Heater, 2023 PEERS Conference
The need to accept lower-quality biomass, including effluent treatment sludge with high sulfur content and waste with high chloride levels, is now resulting in dew point corrosion of biomass power boilers. The method for mitigating dew point corrosion in power boilers has been to ensure that the air heater tube temperatures are elevated above the acid dew point. Another method to mitigate dew point corrosion is proper alloy selection. A candidate material should be resistant to aqueous corrosion during the formation of water on the inside of the boiler tubes when the tube surfaces drop below the water due point and be compatible with the existing infrastructure. This study provides a review of field study efforts where corrosion coupons were exposed to flue gases in air heater environments and held at temperatures below acid dewpoints to demonstrate material performance to dewpoint corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Carbon steel, 300 grade stainless steel, and duplex stainless steel has been tested in coastal and interior mills to support material selection support and raise concerns associated with dew point corrosion. The coupons were characterized by change in thickness and optical microscopy to rank performance in the environment.
