Monitoring and Eliminating Risks of Corrosion and Stress Corrosion Cracking in Kraft Pulp Digesters, 2023 PEERS Conference
Digester corrosion, especially stress corrosion cracking, is a major topic for the pulp and paper industry as catastrophic failure of pressurized equipment may result, and risks to life and property are also significant. Also, the loss of passivation and consequent general corrosion due to modified cooking conditions remains an issue. The present work has the main objective to study the change in corrosive behavior of selected continuous digesters over time and display the value of continuous on-line monitoring and periodical passivity measurements in understanding and defining the corrosion risk development. The risks to carbon steel digesters running on modern cooking processes are demonstrated to be significant.
