Will Durant wrote The Story of Civilization. It took him 40 years and it spans 11 volumes. His coauthor was Ariel Durant, and it’s no coincidence that they were married. If you’re going to write an epic tome about all of human history, it’s convenient to be able to talk about it over breakfast, or walking the dog, or doing any of the other 1,000 things we all do, alone or with our partners and families, day in and day out. Without making the pursuit a daily habit, how could you even begin to tackle a topic so complicated and colossal?
