Pulp and paper manufacturers are facing reductions in the available workforce, knowledge loss due to retiring experts and turnover, and shifts to hybrid working models. We need a way to reduce workloads on resources, communicate and pass trade knowledge, and capture new insights from operations globally. A well implemented enterprise production information management system (PIMS) can achieve all of this.

This article discusses three methods for enterprise level PIMS deployment: top-down, bottom-up, and hybrid. The top-down approach is created at the corporate level and is pushed down to the mills. This is a common way manufactures deploy PIMS across their organization. Its goal is to create uniformity across all sites. Bottom-up is a less traditional PIMS deployment style in which manufacturers have their sites create their own PIMS system based on loose requirements. This allows flexibility for sites and allows more individual freedom. The last method is a hybrid of the two. The hybrid model starts with a bottom-up implementation, gathers successful applications, and then deploys them in a top-down manner across the mills. This allows organizations to benefit from the innovation from their mills, and still capitalize on more uniform scalability. Each method has strengths and tradeoffs which will be discussed.
