Vacuum-Assisted Water Removal from Highly Refined Furnish, 23TAPPICon
Papermaking suspensions having a high content of highly refined fibres have been used for certain paper qualities like greaseproof papers, baking papers, glassine papers, certain specialty papers, etc. In most of those applications, the forming section (mostly Fourdrinier formers) has had the challenge of dealing with stocks presenting hard dewatering conditions to achieve the desired final paper properties (in particular, low air permeance).
In this work, furnishes consisting of highly refined fibres from BHKP with SR values of 43, 72, 85 and 97 have been under evaluation in a laboratory vacuum-assisted sheet former to determine their water removal characteristics with selected basis weight and applied vacuum conditions. At the extreme, the 97 SR stock was studied to understand how a stock having characteristics close to coarse micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) quality will perform in such dewatering conditions.
