An Alternative Method of Assessing Accelerated Stability on Aqueous Biobased Dispersions for Oil and Grease Resistance (OGR) Coatings, 23TAPPICon
The accelerated stability of coating formulations intended to provide oil and grease resistance is typically determined by measuring the sample's properties over time. This can be a laborious process, depending on the formulation's complexity and the number of samples being tested. This paper proposes an alternative method for assessing accelerated stability, namely the temperature cycling test, which has been demonstrated to yield comparable results in a fraction of the time by taking advantage of rheology and flow analysis.
In this study, we began by discussing the significance of biobased coatings over conventional coatings, such as their fluoro-based counterparts, and then moved on to discuss the significance of the accelerated stability test for coating formulation and the principles underlying rheology and flow analysis techniques, highlighting their benefits over conventional methods. Then, we describe how various materials can be evaluated, emphasizing that this technique is particularly suited for complex mixtures such as coatings. Lastly, we present our own experiments with potential coating formulations for oil and grease resistance, followed by suggestions for future research in this field.
