The North American Packaging market has seen incredible growth in the last decade due in part to online commerce and shipping. Manufacturers of packaging materials have been looking for ways to increase operational efficiency by increasing machine speed, increasing utilization of recycled content, while also closing and reusing the water loop as part of their ongoing sustainability improvements. As recycle content increases and the water loop closes, the papermaking system gets increasingly more challenging for traditional cationic retention and drainage polymers to perform effectively. Kemira has developed a group of amphoteric polymers for the packaging segment that will perform more effectively in a high conductivity, high alkalinity environment to deliver colloidal retention, drainage, and fine particle fixation. These polymers are shown to control hydrophobic and colloidal particle populations, leading to cleaner water loops and increased efficiency with the continued reuse of machine water. The polymers also serve to facilitate faster drainage, leading to improvements in machine productivity.
