Application Programs Through Full Understanding of Process, 23TAPPICon

The application of specialty chemicals in the pulp mill usually falls into one of two positions, the cheapest option and the performance option. As mills come under financial pressure due to raw materials, market shrinking, or maintenance issues, the drive to just use the cheapest application at the point often leads to other issues within the facility but outside of the application location. This financially driven point optimization will lead to issues in other areas or modifications from best practices that can lead to a system-wide increase in cost that can overwhelm the savings associated with the cheapest option approach. This puts technical managers and process engineers in a difficult position during the evaluation and justification process. A more proper approach requires a thorough understanding of the interrelations between the pulp, recovery, and recausticizing areas, as well as the financial breakpoints, as not all specialty chemicals are applicable at all production rates or operating conditions. To discuss this approach, the process of evaluating will be discussed, and a couple of examples will be used to demonstrate actual evaluations for both simple and complex programs.

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.
