Pulp Mill Wash Aid Innovative Technology - Silicone Fluid Free, 23TAPPICon
For the past 20 years, silicone-based defoamers have dominated the paper industry as the primary wash aids used in Kraft pulping process. Silicone oils and surfactants provide robust air entrainment control and pulp washing efficiency at the high temperatures encountered in the pulp washing phase, leading to their almost complete replacement of oil-based wash aid chemistries. However, silicone-based defoamers have some known issues (often when overdosed) that can lead to carry-over and deposits downstream in the paper process that lead to deposits and other paper quality issues. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) will show up in systems using silicone-based defoamer, and many mills have a control specification, limiting the amount of allowable PDMS in pulp coming off the final stage of washing (usually less than 20 ppm), to avoid issues.
