Modelling Strength Properties of Kraft Linerboard made on Multi-ply Paper Machine from Component Properties and Machine Factors, 23TAPPICon
Modern multi-ply paper machines make high performance Kraft liner paperboard using virgin Kraft pulp on top ply and blends of Kraft, recycled fibre and broke pulps on middle and back plies. The level of refining of Kraft fibre, amounts and quality of recycle and broke pulps, and how the paper machine is operated normally influence the key strength properties of finished paperboard. Quite often optimal refining condition and other process variables are not achieved leading to key strength properties that do not meet target specification. This problem could be mitigated by development of a model that could also be used as a ‘what-if’ tool. Such a model has been developed based on extensive laboratory investigation and paper mill refining trials. Both machine factors and mill to laboratory fibre development ratio of virgin unbleached softwood Kraft fibre have been used in the model. The model has been validated using test results of key strength properties for more than 9000 jumbo reels. Sensitivity analysis of the model showed that had the mill used the model, it could avoid production of finished product that did not conform to the specifications for large number of jumbos made on several days.
