Paperboard Surface Smoothness Correlation Case Study, 23TAPPICon

Surface smoothness is a critical controlled variable in coated SBS (Solid Bleached Sulfate) paperboard manufacturing. Print quality, one of the main product properties affected by surface smoothness, is typically quantified by PPS (Parker Print Surf Roughness), Sheffield or Bendtsen roughness measurements. Print quality is dependent on several process variables from pulp (fiber) type to dry‐end configuration. Wedge data analysis software was used to understand critical production process variables impacting surface smoothness, such as quality of pulp, wet end chemistry, refining, press section variables, surface starch application, coat weight, and blade metering configurations, among others. This study attempted to weigh each of these variables' impact on paperboard surface properties for a specific production line.
