Comparisons of the tensile and compressive response of paperboard, 23TAPPICon
It is well known that the tensile and compressive responses of paper and paperboard substantially differ from each other. This difference is largely due to additional structural deformation on multiple length scale levels. The compressive response of paperboard is important for many packaging applications, yet testing and modeling are exasperated by the additional compliance and yielding one observes in compression. A mechanistic model is presented that captures the role of structure on the differences between tension and compression is presented. Comparison of the tensile response to the compression response of paperboard and structures of paperboard are presented help understand and separate the role of material versus structure as elucidated by the model. The purpose of this research is to guide one in the choice of constitutive parameters utilized to model the performance of packaging.
