SetPoint: Summer Lovin’, Had Me a Box, Paper360º July/August 2024 

As a midwestern suburban kid, summer represented a kind of freedom: do what you want, when you want, until the streetlights came on and the fireflies flicker at the edges of the yard. For me and the other kids on Patton Street in the summer of 1972, that meant FORTS. Lots of forts, built in lots of yards, made substantially of that miracle material of childhood: cardboard boxes.

The town bike shop, Winkleman’s, had started to get its new stock shipped in giant, flat cartons that made excellent wall panels. We’d beg our parents to bring home cartons from the grocery store too, and we would cut and tape them into cabinets, periscopes, escape tunnels, or anything else that our forts might need. After summer downpours, we’d leave the ruins on the curb and start all over.
