Editorial: New coating grades require new tests: Barrier performance inside the package, TAPPI Journal November 2024
The evolution of the paper industry from one based primarily on printing and writing papers decades ago to one based more on packaging grades has caused the development of new types of coatings. While it’s still important to provide a good printing surface to the outside of the pack-age, a lot of the innovation is taking place on the inside of the package. There, traditional barrier materials such as wax, extruded polymers, and fluorochemicals are being replaced by more sustainable aqueous dispersion alternatives. These alternatives have given rise to the need for new and different tests to assess the performance of the barrier. Thus, we have this special Barrier Coating Testing issue.
