Automated Long Range Laser Metrology to Deliver Paper Roll Quality Control (PRQC). Part 1 Case Study, TAPPICon24
Operators are still the last line of defense to determine if the side profile and core alignment are within accepted limits before wrapping and shipment to the customer. Often times this requires the operator to stand on conveyor platforms to conduct manual measurements. Other quality control parameters (interlace child rolls that do not separate, confirmation of roll length/diameter, and label placement) cannot be verified before final wrapping without human intervention. Traditional 2D and 3D laser triangulation systems are ineffective in these locations due to cost, complexity, and the inability of these systems to work when located at significant distances from the roll. This paper discusses the results of how lasers coupled with newer high-resolution camera technology and software deliver simple and effective metrology and other quality control parameters to reduce mill waste, increase delivered quality to the customer, and eliminate safety hazards.
